What ever happened to PG-13???
By Lara | June 27, 2008
OK…so I am REALLY becoming disgusted with this INSANE society that we live in! Where can a Mom find a good movie that is safe or her kids…and for MOM!
We rented Fools Gold the other night to watch with our teenager. She loved Matthew Machonehey. Unfortunately, we never finished it…Somewhere between G-d and bare b oobs (yes, I know the space is there) I had to call it quits. I mean HUH??? Have I been asleep? I mean I KNOW G-d has become a staple for any movie over PG…but BARE B OOBS?????? (yes, I know the space is there) GRRRRR!!!!! We do our best to pick clean movies and G-d is one of those tasteless word combos we refuse to watch or keep in our library. We have let e few get by over the years depending on the overall movie….but this was just YUCK! I mean there was even a scene when a bimbo type character opened her legs WIDE for the camera….sure she had a bathing suite on…but…COME ON!
OK…so today was the boiling point for me….We are going to our very close friend’s house tonight and I had to decline her movie pick. You see, I now MUST read James Dobson FIRST to make sure I am prepared! Well…27 dresses had some questionable scenes in it…I mean my FOUR year old does NOT need to see 2 people getting hot and heavy in the back seat of a car and taking each others clothes off…even if they show nothing!
Honestly….neither does the teenager whom I am teaching to wait til marriage!!! Cause let me tell you…what goes in WILL come out one way or another….Personally, I think these movies would be just as popular…or even MORE so if they left the crap out! KWIM?
WHEW…ROFL…sorry for the rant…I am just so GRRRRR!
OK…so are there ANY decent movies that the WHOLE family can enjoy without being too cornball???

I totally agree. It is really sad that movies are so bad. We always check out ALL movies now with Dr. Dobson’s site too BEFORE we see them. I too asked a friend not to show a movie when she invited us over - it was difficult to do that (I think she might have been offended), but I did not want to watch it or want my family to see it either -
There is some kind of new DVD player out now that takes out bad scenes and profanity. I dont remember the name of though.

I agree. When we went to go see Fool’s Gold I was taken a back by the fact that is was ONLY rated PG-13.
Now imagine if that is rated PG-13 what R rated movies are like - trust me I have seen TWO (count them TWO) rated R movies in the past SEVERAL years (I have lost count) and I was SO appalled at what these people think is entertaining!
I agree these movies would be good without all that crap!
Now 27 Dresses wasn’t too bad from what I recall, but all of my little ones are too young to actually see that movie so when I saw the movie I wasn’t thinking about if my kids should watch it or not.
Now there was a scene where they were making out in the car etc. But again PG-13 is rated that for a reason, no one under the age of 13 should see those movies, and sometimes PG-13 movies are a little too intense for young teenagers as well.

Hi Lara, I haven’t seen too many movies lately. But if I recall correctly, ‘Hitch’ with Will Smith was a gr8 and I don’t recall any sexual content/foul language (you may want to double check on the language though).
Quite honestly I can’t think of any others atm - Good luck!!

One of the reasons I don’t have a TV in my house lol. We do watch some movies but its very rare because of what you just said above. I just checked out from the library the movie version of “Madeline”……I thought it couldn’t be bad afterall it is for KIDS. Well it was rated PG and I had no idea what for. WELL WE FOUND OUT lol……it had 3 curse words in it! I couldn’t believe they had curse words in a CHILDREN’S movie! That really made me upset.

Unfortunately, there’s just too many movies out there with super blatant sexual innuendos. We can’t really keep it out. ABout the swear words, I think should lighten up about it. As long as they dont cuss every few lines, then I think it should be ok. I mean as parents, you’ll be worried - and that’s ok but honestly?Your kids are going to pick it up one day esp: the 13 yrs and above. You’ll be surprise at what they know.
You can’t shield them forever ya know?At the very breathe a little. Go get cable - something from HBO family or something.Or stick to anything by Disney’s.Romabce or whatever mature plots are not meant for childrens. They won’t understand the plot too.

You got me on that one Lara. I can’t think of anything offhand. I saw 27 Dresses by myself and would never consider showing it to someone your daughter’s age, nevermind my own kids who are younger.
The best thing to do is stick to your idea of checking films out on pluggedin online first. You may have to go with older movies until (hopefully) the film industry gets the message.

Oh, one more thing. About the person before me who commented that you can’t shield your child from everything, I agree, but I don’t think you should “lighten up” either. Sure, kids are going to hear things, but you don’t want it to be too early and you don’t want them to see things too early either.
Besided, there’s a huge difference between them hearing something at school (or wherever) and them hearing it while watching a movie you’ve rented. It’s like giving those words or that behavior your implied consent.
